WANG Hong is most actively an international toured multi-instrumentalist. He graduated from Nanjing Normal University's Music Department where he mainly studied the erhu (two string bowed instrument), composition and studied the oboe under Professor ZHU Tong at Nanjing Arts Academy. After graduated, he taught songwriting and oboe at the music department for about five years. Later, he changed his career to music editor at Jiangsu Province Institute of Arts. He studied for eight years on traditional songs and folk music.
Hong has been living in the United States for more than twenty years. As a dynamic performer, he has performed with Meredith Monk for her opera “Atlas”; with Conductor/composer Tan Dun for his “2000 Today” world premiere with Shanghai Broadcasting Orchestra in China; Zhao Jiping's "My Favourite Concubine -- Suite for Orchestra at the “WaldbÜhane in Berlin 2000” with Berlin Philharmonic, contacted by Kent Nagano; performed with the San Francisco Symphony for the 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008 New Year concerts and the “California Dreaming” Concert in 2007 contacted by Edward Outwater and Caroline Kwuan. He also played Gang Situ's Erhu & Violin Double Concerto with the Stanford Symphony by conductor Carla Lemon, Albert Chang’s erhu concerto with Fremont Symphony. In 2010, he played dizi and xun with the Opera Boston for 2011 Pulitzer Music Winner Zhou Long’s World Premiere “Madame White Snake”. In May 2010, he performed Albert Chang's Fantasy for the Erhu and Orchestra with Neubrandenburg Philharmonic conducted by Stefan Malzew, and 2012 New Year Concert with Freiburg Philharmonic in Germany conducted by Fabrice Bollon . In 2011, he played Alan Chan's Erhu Concerto "Rock-Paper-Scissors" World Premiere with St. Matthew's Chamber Orchestra in California. He also performed with jazz musicians Max Roach, David Murray, Jong Jan and Anthony Brown’s Asian American Jazz Orchestra etc. in San Francisco Jazz Festival and Stone Grove Festival etc.
As a leading contemporary musician, he has produced many new music concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area, such as the “Thundering Across the Sky,” “A Musical Dialogue with Dancing Lions,” “New Music Concert” with the Citywinds, and “Three Sound” – An Experimental Music Series with computer music composer Carl Stone, sheng master Wu Wei, matouqin master Li Bo and bass clarinet/composer Gene Coleman who is the artistic director of Sound Field Festival. He toured with the new music group Het Collectibet (Belgium) and Ensemble Dragon (Germany) in Belgium in 2010. His coming performances are including Guo Wenjing's contemporary opera "Feng Yi Ting" at the Spoleto Festival 2012 in Charleston, S. Carolina and Lincoln Center, New York.
He has performed at many international music festivals in the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Belgium and the United States etc. As a “musical archaeologist” (John Glionna, L.A. Times), he visited many folk master musicians in Mainland China. Most notably, he visited Inner Mongolian twice and collected the most valued traditional songs and music from the grassland. He is also self-learning a legend instrument, the matouqin (morin khuur; a horse head cello), from Inner Mongolia.
As a composer, he has composed some pieces for the Chinese ensemble and contemporary mixed bands. He has also won awards for some of his compositions. His music is also published by China’s top music magazine - “Composition” and Taiwan Publish Houses. He has also recorded for many recording companies such as Sony Classical, Sega, TDK, Sound World and Water Baby Records. He is also a zhonghu soloist for the album “Monk’s Moods” which was nominated by Grammy’s Big band Award.
Currently, Mr. Wang is currently working with the Track Team's composers Jeremy Zuckerman, Ben Wynn for the TV episodes of Kungfu Panda and Legend of Korra. As a freelance musician, he is working on different new music projects with symphonies, jazz groups, country music, dance and all kind of new productions. He never stops exploring traditional and contemporary music. He always believes “Tradition is the most useful source for creative music.”
